‘The Purge’ Looks Terrifying Because It Just Might Actually Happen

You know things can’t be good when a film takes place in an “idyllic” society.

1% unemployment. Crime at an all-time low. Sure. So long as everyone gets to go out and murder people one night a year without consequence.

At least, that’s the plot behind this year’s The Purge, which stars Ethan Hawke (Sinister) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) as a couple who are forced to protect their family when a stranger enters their home in the midst of the annual crime spree.

I love films like this. The scariest situations are those that you could actually picture yourself in. Yeah, zombies and werewolves and (some) vampires can be frightening on screen, but the greatest examples of horror are those that involve the lengths real people would go to to hurt one another. And The Purge looks like it will actually deliver.

What are your thoughts on the trailer?

The Purge opens May 31st.
